About The Tamil Genocide Monument

On January 8, 2021, a monument erected at the University of Jaffna to honour the victims and survivors of the Tamil Genocide in Sri Lanka was demolished by the Sri Lankan state. This act drew widespread international condemnation.

In response, on January 20, 2021, the City of Brampton, under the leadership of Mayor Patrick Brown, unanimously passed a motion to construct a Tamil Genocide monument in Brampton.

On November 1, 2023, Brampton City Council passed a further motion requesting the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) to assume leadership of the monument project, in collaboration with the City of Brampton, BTA, BTSA, and other relevant stakeholders.

The monument, designed as a stainless steel structure in the shape of an open book, symbolizes the importance of educating current and future generations about the Tamil Genocide. The map of Tamil Eelam featured on the book represents the historical, traditional, and ancestral homeland of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, where the genocide continues to this day.

The monument’s nine panels represent the nine districts of Tamil Eelam. The outer sides of the panels display the Tamil Genocide Wall, documenting acts of genocide committed against the Tamil people since 1948. The inner sides provide detailed accounts of specific acts of genocide.

The information presented on the panels is drawn from credible and independent sources. However, it is important to acknowledge that numerous acts of genocide remain undocumented due to restricted access to victims and the limitations imposed by the Sri Lankan state.

This monument stands as a solemn tribute to the victims and survivors of the Tamil Genocide. It reaffirms our enduring commitment to the pursuit of international recognition, accountability, and justice.
